Sucralose, peanuts, and fruits...oh my!

10 Mar, 2017

Most keto advocates know that keto is pretty simple. That's part of the appeal. That, and the fact that it's incredibly healthy for body and mind. But when things start to get a little less simple, a little closer to a "gray area," then people start to...well, freak out a little.

(This article refers to separate levels of certification which Certified Ketogenic has since combined into one.)

Certified Ketogenic was founded to help cut through the confusion about what foods should be considered acceptable when someone opts for the Ketogenic Diet and Lifestyle. And in so doing, we had to wade into that gray area to make some choices about what we'd allow and what we wouldn't. Of course, we didn't do this arbitrarily. We did it with intent, doing research, talking to experts, and coming to conclusions about some of the more controversial ingredients in keto foods.

That led us to the three-tiered approach to certification (Certified Ketogenic, Ketogenic Approved, and Ketogenic Friendly), and it allowed us to categorize those "gray area" foods and ingredients in such a way as to ensure the least amount of confusion.

So why am I explaining all of this? Well, quite simply, it's because some people are kind of upset about the fact that we allow ingredients like sucralose, peanuts, some fruits, seeds, nuts, and certain vegetable oils to be included in foods that we certify.

To be clear, those controversial ingredients will only be allowed at the lowest level of certification (Ketogenic Friendly). That means only those foods with the Ketogenic Friendly label will possibly contain those "gray area" ingredients. If you're looking at a label that is Ketogenic Approved or Certified Ketogenic, then you don't have to worry about those "gray area" ingredients at all. Because we won't certify those foods at those levels.

And the reason is simple: We are looking out for you. Here's the thing: If you don't like the idea of peanuts or sucralose or other ingredients that you determine are not right for you, are not acceptable for you, and do not fit into your keto lifestyle, then we've made it super easy to identify them and avoid them.

If you see a label with the Ketogenic Friendly certification on it, and you want to avoid the "gray area" foods...don't eat it. It's that simple. But not everyone does, and those foods bearing the Ketogenic Friendly label are going to be okay for a less ingredient-rigid keto lifestyle. You have to decide what you will and won't allow, and then act on that.

Our mission is to take ALL the guesswork out of keto...for EVERYONE. We are simply working, literally day and night, to make it easier for you to identify which foods are appropriate for your style of keto.

Hopefully, that clears up the controversy for this particular area. Of course, not everyone will be completely satisfied with our methods and processes. But, as long as we're helping the vast majority of people (and, from what we're told, we are), then we are accomplishing our mission.

We want you to succeed, get healthy, and be awesome.

Because you deserve that.
